We scheduled a dinner with Mark Spangenthal for a family vacation in Asheville. Mark was responsive in all phases of planning the menu. Communication with Mark was seamless. He arrived on time and was extremely well prepared and organized. We had two very social children in our group and Mark was patient and kind, answering all of their many questions about the cooking process.
Our meal began with sumptuous crab cakes and fried green tomatoes, beautifully accompanied with buttermilk corn and traditional slaw. The main course consisted of the most delicious fried chicken any of us have ever had. The crisp exterior and succulent meat certainly reminded us of fried chicken, but all of the grease was mysteriously missing. Southern spoon bread, a first for all of us, buttered beans and sausage gravy completed the dinner. Just when we thought things could not get any better, Mark served a mixed berry shortcake with fresh whipped cream. The portions were generous and we had nearly an entirely second meal the next evening.
Mark left the kitchen spotless at the end of the evening. We enjoyed Mark’s unpretentious presence throughout the evening and this dinner was certainly a highlight of our Asheville vacation.
